Learn The Basics Of Crochet Art

Hello and welcome to the Creative-Capsule ...!!!
Today's post is to motivate you to learn a new crafting skill.
Crocheting is magical handcrafting technique to make a textured fabric from a ball of yarn with just a single tiny hook.If you have never tried crocheting before, let me tell you it is simpler than you think. you really only need to know a few basic stiches of crochet and rest all complicated looking stiches are actually the combination of these basic stitches. So learning and practicing these primary stitches will make you fairly ready for any beginner crochet project.

How do I start? What all do I need? What can I make in the beginning? If these are questions you are asking yourself, then you are in the right place. I intend to guide you through a few simple steps to help you get started on your crochet journey and making your own projects in no time.

So lets start with choosing a yarn and a crochet hook. Going for yarn and needle shopping as a beginner can be overwhelming. There are various types of yarn like wool, cotton, acrylic, organic etc with various thickness. Different thickness of yarn call for particular size hook so the crochet work is not too tight or not too loose. Most of the beginner friendly projects can be made with medium thickness
yarn such as 8 ply with needle size 4mm- 6mm. If it is too confusing, check the label on your yarn ball and you will find the recommended needle size for it. The most important thing to know is that you can crochet with any type of yarn so don't stress out too much about choosing "the perfect yarn" for your beginner projects. Just grab your favourite color and start crocheting, trust me you will have fun.

So lets look into the primary crochet stitches

  • Slip Knot :
  • This is the first stitch of any crochet project.
  • Make a loop, then hook another loop through it. Tighten the loop gently and your slip knot is done.

 Chain Stitch (Ch) :
  • Chain stitch is the Foundation of your work. It is as long or short as the width of your work.
  • Yarn over the hook and pull a new loop on the hook. This is one chain stich done.
  • Repeat it for length of the foundation chain.

 Single Crochet (SC) :
  • This is the one shortest height stitch.
  •  Insert the hook into your work, yarn over the hook and draw up a loop (2 loops on the hook)
  • Yarn over the hook and draw a new loop through all the loops (1 loop on the hook)
  • Single crochet done

Double Crochet (DC):
  • Double crochet is the double height stitch
  • Yarn over the hook, insert the hook into your work, yarn over the hook again and draw up a loop (3 loops on the hook)
  • Yarn over pull though 2 loops (2 loops on the hook)
  • Yarn over pull through 2 loops again. (1 loop on the hook)
  •  Double crochet stitch done.

 Half Double Crochet (HDC):
  • Half double crochet is the in between stitch of single and double crochet.
  • Yarn over the hook, insert the hook into your work, yarn over the hook again and draw up a loop (3 loops on your hook)
  • Yarn over the hook and pull through all three loops (1 loop on the hook)
  • Half double crochet done.

Slip Stich (SL):
  •  Slip stitch is the zero height stitch. It is used to join the work when working in round.
  •  Insert the hook in the work, yarn over the hook and pull through a loop all the way( 1 loop on the hook).
  • Slip stitch done.

The above stitches pretty much sums up the requirement of any beginner crochet project. Learning crochet can be tricky at first and you might fiddle between the yarn and hook.  But I wanted to let you know that you will get there eventually in few tries. Far too many times  have I heard people  say they tried it once or twice and gave up. Everyone will learn at their own pace, so be patient with yourself. Just practice some basics and once you get a hang of handling the yarn and needle start slow with some easy small projects like bookmarks, coasters etc.

I am hoping this post will help and inspire you learn a new skill. If you like the post please share with your friends, also comment and let me know about your crochet journey. Thank you and Happy Cocheting ..!!
