Easy DIY No Wax Candles

Hello and welcome to the Creative-Capsule ...!!!

Candles are one of favourite home décor accessory. I love how they add fragrance, warmth and light to any corner and just generally make your home feel cozier. Well, the problem is they don't last forever and can be a bit expensive. But with this super easy DIY you can make your own candles in no time with the stuff that you might already have in your home.

Last Christmas my daughter's Class Teacher gifted each of her student a Handmade Mini no wax candle with their initials on it, and my daughter couldn't stop bragging about her personalised gift. This made me curious to search for this DIY online. And when I found it on Pinterest, my first thought was "It cant be that simple". But trust me it is.

Another advantage of making your own candle is that you can control what goes into it. You can customise the fragrance and the strength according to your liking. Or if you are sensitive to fragrance then just leave it out.

Material you will need:

1. Jars / Containers:
Any container to make your candle into like mason jar, empty candle jars, ceramic bowls or even old tea cups would work. Just make sure your container is sturdy enough to handle the heat and flame after you lit the candle. Clean the left over wax from the almost empty candle jar (or just leave it as is if you don't mind it).

2 . Candle base :
(Copha Vegetable Shortening)
For the base we are going to use vegetable shortening. You might already have it in your refrigerator but if not, it is readily available at any supermarket. For the no wax candles you can also use natural wax like soy wax and beeswax as a base. But vegetable shortening is easily available, cheap and works just as good. Another plus of using vegetable shortening is that the cleanup after is easier as vegetable shortening is edible unlike the other waxes.

3. Wick :
For the wick I am going to just use the old birthday candles lying in my cabinet. But if you are feeling crafty, you can use cotton twine or jute twine or you could buy the ready made wicks at the hobby shop.

4. Essential Oil:
(Thursday Plantation 100% Pure Lavender Essential Oil)
The fragrance is optional but it will definitely add a step up to this DIY.  Just grab any pure essential oil of your choice.

Method:

1. Melt the vegetable shortening using the double boiler or microwave, and divide it among the candle jars. Add a few drops of essential oils in each jar and give it a mix.

2. Cut the bottoms of the birthday candles so they fit perfectly inside the jar. The vegetable shortening will start to solidify slowly as it cools down. When it slightly firm, slide the  birthday candle in the center of the jar.

4. Let the jar cool down completely before lightening the candle .

Tip: You can use pieces of wax crayons to melt with the shortening to make colorful candles.

This is such a easy and practical DIY that will give you amazing results. These candles look just like regular candles but have longer burning time due to oil in vegetable shortening. Once you are familiar with the process you can decorate your candles with things like shells, feathers, crystals, autumn leaves etc.  So go ahead and make your own candles, super easy, super quick and super crafty.
